By those numbers, hazing has become a common ritual, performed every year in schools across the country. Throughout the country, there are more than nine million college students becoming members of a Greek organization. Greek organizations have usually been associated with partying, drinking and hazing. While some Greek organizations may participate in these social actions, there are many that do not. Here at Stockton, there are several fraternities and sororities that students are encouraged to join.
While the opportunities are endless for those who want to join a Greek life organization, there are also other organizations which the school does not encourage students to join. There are six Greek organizations at Stockton that have been revoked due to violations of acts of hazing. The two Greek life organizations were closed due to many violations, one of which was hazing. One freshman girl told of how she was chosen to be in the sorority and how the hazing situation had gone. Boys also joining fraternities are more commonly exposed to hazing.
The charges of this hazing incident had become more than just a hazing violation but a racially charged violation. The members were eventually expelled from the fraternity and meetings were held at the school for the appropriate solution.
While hazing is common in both fraternities and sororities, we can see how different the hazing is. Boys wanting to join a fraternity are often pressured into drinking in order to get into a fraternity. According to USA Today, at least one hazing-induced death per year has occurred across college campuses since Glass 1. Men and women are both reduced to their basic stereotypes of their gender in order to get into the Greek organizations they wish to be in.
Hazing has become both an issue for those in the organizations and for those outside of the organizations. Hazing has now started at a younger age, high school. While Greek life is usually known for it, hazing has now come down to high schoolers who play football.
